New fragrance releases for 2012

Monday 19th December 2011

2011 was a big year for Tommi Sooni with the release of 3 fragrances: Jinx, Eau de Tommi Sooni 1 and Eau de Tommi Sooni 11.

Next year we keep up the pace with the release of two fragrances.

An Australian autumn is a perfect time to release an Australian inspired perfume.
We have been working on this 'Australian story' for some time and wanted to avoid the cliches sometimes associated with Australia, so take your mind far away from the vast desserts, the tropical islands or the party atmosphere of Sydney's nightlife.
Instead discover a part of Terre Australis you may not know, the beautiful southern coast French explorers traversed at the beginning of the 19th century.
Our Australian perfume is a bouquet of native florals that include: silver wattle, green boronia buds, Australian jasmine, and coastal tee tree. Feminine, distinctive, light hearted and fashionable our newest creation reflects the best in the Australian character.

Our second release for 2012 is a stylish green eau de toilette, Eau de Tommi Sooni 111. This beautiful fragrance is perfect for men and women. EdTS111 is just as comfortable in the boardroom as in the cocktail lounge. More on EdTS111 later.

Rhonda The Roving Reporter for TSN

Saturday 19th November 2011

S: Hi Rhonda

R: Hi Steven

S: Are you excited to be Rhonda the roving reporter for TSN?

R: Let me tell you it's a thrill. I love talking and I have lots to talk about.

S: OK, Rhonda let's get straight to the point. Where have you been lately?

R: Boston, London and the North Pole.

S: You're pulling my leg.

R: No, I really did go to the North Pole

S: Why on earth were you at the North Pole?

R: I was on a luxury cruise ship exploring frozen islands that people rarely go
 to.

S: So what does the North Pole smell like?

R: It smells of nothing, no let me correct that, it smells of incredibly fresh air.

S: Does all of the North Pole smell the same?

R: Mostly but at the same time you don't want to be down wind from a walrus, they smell like rotten fish.

S: And the memory of the North Pole that will stick with you forever.

R: Sitting in the ships jacuzzi sipping French champagne and watching the whales go by.

S: You have a tough life Rhonda

R: That's true darling.

S: And what was your highlight for 2011?

R: I visited Harrods and attended the Perfume Diaries exhibition. To die for darling, just to die for.

S: Since you love boats so much did you see the Guerlain perfume bottle in the shape of a ship, the 'Normandie'?

R: I did and now I must have one for myself - but I suspect even my trip to the North Pole cost less than buying one of these vintage bottles on eBay.

S: And what about Boston, anything happening there?

R: Logan airport smelt of musty carpet mixed with cleaning agents. A smell I tend to associate with more than one airport in the US. They need to do something about this.
'Welcome to America', smell the carpet. Not a good look.

S: Anything else?

R: In the corridors of my hotel there were literally hundreds of Irish dancing Shirley Temples practicing for a national dance competition. Those ten year old tappers were a force to be reckoned with!

S: Anything else?

R: They smelt of cheap perfume.

S: Thank you Rhonda

R: My pleasure darling.

Jinx, an inspired story

Friday 11th November 2011

It's not an easy task to stand out from a crowd of flamboyant nightclubbers on the dance floor. Each individual attention seeking in an era when standing out was the main goal. At the hottest night club in town was Vanessa Petropoulos, the girl not everyone knew by name but who everyone knew by sight. A style maverick, thin as a reed, rouged and angular. Vanessa, attired in a manner so intelligently put together the rest of us could only hope to bathe in her glow.

Madame Carven in Paris knew talent when faced with it and asked the newly married Vanessa Leyjonhelm to design fur coats for her label. The Australian Ballet describe Vanessa's black tutu for their production 'Divergence' as the companies defining image of the 90's. The tutu made from air conditioning material was 'a bold and astonishing take on the most traditional form of classical ballet garments'.

For Tommi Sooni Vanessa was asked to design a dress for our first perfume, Tarantella. The result is a dress made from pleated crinoline, a material usually used to fashion hats. In silhouette this elegant dress echoes the traditional garment worn by women to dance the Tarantella, but look closer. The pleated crinoline is made into dozens of fans sewn together to fashion a monochromatic fall from the waist.

What makes this dress even more amazing is the journey that was taken to bring the inspired design to life. Not long after the success of Divergence Vanessa was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph glands. She became critically ill and was forced to stop work. After a long recovery from cancer Vanessa was given the all clear but unfortunately this was short lived and the cancer returned resulting in long periods of chemotherapy. More than once I visited Vanessa during this period to return home full of despair. Vanessa's strength and determination to live proved me wrong again and again. Her will to endure and overcome diversity is one of Vanessa's great characteristics as is her continued ability to create, always with an eye for beauty and conceptual originality.

As the creative director for Tommi Sooni I need a muse to help me focus on the qualities of a women who inspires a perfume brief. Jinx is brave, it is beautiful, original and admired. Jinx is Vanessa.

Perfume and gender

Friday 4th November 2011

When you buy a bottle of fragrance for yourself or for someone else do you consider the 'gender' of the fragrance you have chosen? Chances are you have. Now consider if all the perfumes available came in bottles without labels. You would choose the perfume you liked the most, right. Would it surprise you that both men and women would probably make the same choices as each other again and again.

Perfume brands tend to market their fragrances to either men or women, think 'blue' for men and 'pink' for women. Sound familiar. Marketing professionals know that men and women do make different choices according to preference in scent taste but they also steer you towards buying either a 'blue' or 'pink' fragrance through packaging, imagery, and store placement.

So why is tuberose a popular choice for men in Italy or rose the #1 choice for men in the middle east. The cool, green, herbaceous Vetiver commonly included in mens colognes is popular amongst women. Why? because these ingredients all smell good to many people, regardless of gender.

Next time you are searching for a fragrance try to forget gender. Test fragrances on your skin that you might not usually consider. Personally I wear a rose perfume to bed that we are trialling as a future release for Tommi Sooni. I find rose comforting and it helps me sleep, especially on cold nights.

A number of men have mentioned to me they enjoy wearing Tarantella. It's an elegant chypre and to me smells great on a guy who prefers tailored attire.

Choose a fragrance that suits your personality and brings you joy. The 'gender' of a perfume is after all simply a suggestion, not a rule.

Tips on how to wear perfume

Sunday 23rd October 2011

No matter what your prefered fragrance there are ways to maximize the effect of your perfume.

Perfume is affected by the heat generated by your body so pulse points are the perfect place to wear fragrance. Traditionally perfume is worn on the wrists, this is a good idea but please be gentle with your fragrance. Try to resist the temptation to rub both wrists firmly together. You may 'bruise' your perfume and slightly spoil the experience. Placing or spraying fragrance behind your knees or at the elbows also works effectively.

Coco Chanel suggested you wear your perfume where you expect to be kissed. Not a good idea. Have you ever had the misfortune of tasting perfume? Once done you will never do it again and who wants their lover to react by gagging and running for a glass of water!

We naturally place perfume behind our ears, this is apparently not very affective but it makes us feel good so why not. Estee Lauder suggested you create a mist of perfume in the air and then walk into the perfumed cloud. This method is guaranteed to use up a lot of perfume with little effect.

You can lightly spray perfume on to some fabrics such as wool without damaging your clothes but avoid silks, vintage and delicate fabrics as perfume can stain them.

Whatever you do, enjoy the experience. Perfume is there to help you enjoy life.

A great experience in a fine perfumery

Sunday 16th October 2011

Perfume can be bought at numerous outlets, from the high street pharmacy to department stores, discount cosmetic shops and week-end markets but where do you go for the most professional perfume experience?

The answer: a fine perfumery.

Walking into a beautiful perfumery is like walking into another world. The staff are knowledgeable about perfume and are happy to share their know how. They're helpful because they want you to be a satisfied customer. You are their number one priority.

I have been approached by many stores to stock Tommi Sooni but why we would put so much love into a perfume only to have it sold through a second rate shop. What's the point.

So be confident that our retailers will offer you a truly wonderful perfume experience.

And feel free to tell me about it!
